General Apprenticeship Information

The following information is provided to any person interested in choosing the plumbing trade as a career:

  1. The apprenticeship term is five years including a probation period as determined by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
  2. An apprentice works on the job four (4) days a week and attends school for the related training one (1) day per week for three years. (A school day consists of Eight (8) Hours).
  3. The 4th and 5th Year level Apprenticeship consists of Forty (40) hours per week of paid on-the-job training and attending Continuing Education classes on Twenty to Twenty Five (20 to 25) evenings per year.
  4. In school, classes include plan reading, drawing, mathematics, shop work including welding, lead work, soldering and the plumbing code.
  5. An apprentice must maintain a ‘C’ average minimum when attending school.
  6. A $25.00 (non refundable) registration fee (Money Order or Cashier’s Check) is required when the application is submitted.
  7. An apprentice applicant will take an aptitude test. Test points will rank applicants. A Test Taking Tip Book will be available for preparation for the aptitude test at $10.00, upon request.
  8. An apprentice applicant will fill out a Personal Experience Form. (PEF). This information will be scored and combined with aptitude test scores.
  9. A letter of recommendation and/or a letter of intent to hire or a Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Training Certificate of Completion will be accepted and reviewed. It will be combined with the aptitude test and PEF to form the final Ranking List. Deadline for letters is February 13, 2009.
  10. Individuals who have previously been apprentices in the program and who have been dismissed two or more times will not be ranked or selected for an apprenticeship.
  11. An apprentice candidate must pass drug test(s) and physical test(s) as a condition of employment. (Failure will cause the applicant to be dropped from the eligible Ranking List.)
  12. An apprentice must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and transportation to get to the job and drive the employer’s vehicles as a condition of employment and for the term of apprenticeship.
  13. A selected apprentice candidate must attend and successfully complete a five (5) day, Forty (40) hour unpaid orientation week to enter in the program. On the first day of orientation a book fee of approximately $630.00 and a license fee of $15.00 must be paid.
  14. The apprentice will receive a Probationary Apprentice Card and be assigned to a contractor upon completion of the Orientation Week.
  15. Until the Apprentice reports to the contractor immediately following orientation, he or she will not begin the Apprenticeship.
  16. Apprentices are eligible for health and welfare benefits after working six (6) months and accruing 1000 hours in covered employment.
  17. Apprentices are initiated into the Local Union 130 upon satisfactory completion of the probation period and payment of the $500.00 initiation fee.
  18. All apprentices are subject to rules and regulations established by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
  19. Apprentices must comply with a dress code.
